Philippine Tatler: What is it about design and fashion that enthralls you?
Mercedes Salazar: I love the way designers can show with their designs who they are, what their believes and dreams are.
PT: Why did you choose jewellery design?
MS: I chose jewelry and accessory design because I’ve been obsessed with the way that human beings have used pendants for centuries. Ages ago people would use pendants to manifest their beliefs – the first human that used a shell as a necklace made a connection with the universe.
PT: What advice do you give women when it comes to accessorizing?
MS: Play, smile, feel beautiful !
PT: How would you describe your aesthetic?
MS: Tropical, colorful, artisanal
PT: Have you always been interested in fashion and art? If you were not doing this, what would you be doing?
MS: I’ve always felt attracted to materials and its endless possibilities to turn them into pieces. I would have been a chef or maybe a tequila maker.
PT: Where do you draw inspiration from?
MS: From life, from the beauty surrounding us in our every day living.
PT: How would you describe the woman who wears your jewelry?
PT: Why do you feel that it is important to incorporate your culture into your designs?
MS: Because it’s my home, my roots. Colombia is where I come from and where I can get the most beautiful inspiration from.
PT: Each piece that you design is handcrafted by an artisan – why did you choose to collaborate with local craftsmen to create your work?
MS: I do this because their techniques are awesome. It makes every piece extra unique and special. I believe that it is our duty as designers to maintain, and keep artisanal ancestral techniques alive.
